A number of clinical studies have shown that probiotics can significantly improve oral health. It has been shown that microorganisms present in probiotics, like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp., can reduce the growth of harmful bacteria in oral cavities. When given in conjunction with conventional periodontal treatment, probiotics have been shown to improve clinical indicators associated with certain conditions like caries and halitosis. Replacement therapy and using health associated oral microbial species like nitrate-reducing bacteria have been shown to have many oral health benefits including addressing the host-microbial interface to restore oral homeostasis.
