Preliminary experiments conducted in mice show that the drug effectively reduces the load of Zika in the blood and prevents transmission of the virus from the mother to the fetus. A recent study published in Scientific Reports has demonstrated that the antiviral drug sofosbuvir, which is used in treating Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, can be repurposed for the treatment of Zika. This finding is significant at a time when scientific research is being directed towards finding a suitable vaccine candidate for Zika.
