The US FDA has approved the use of a unique microparticle for the treatment of acne vulgaris. With this approval, this microparticls is now licensed for sale in both the US and Europe. This innovative acne therapy involves the use of microparticles that act selectively on the sebaceous glands. In combination with lasers, these microparticles facilitate photothermal heating of the sebaceous glands.
A randomized, blinded, controlled trial conducted with 168 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris found that there was 53 percent median reduction in inflammatory lesion count in patients treated with microparticles as compared to 45 percent treated with laser alone. Furthermore, microparticle treatment in 30.1 percent of patients resulted in clear or almost clear Investigator’s Global Assessment score.
